Latvia boasts nearly 500km of untouched beaches, dozens of ancient Crusader castles, scores of manor homes, charming medieval towns and pristine nature reserves.
As you head west and the bus takes you through Kurzeme, you will see field upon field of green countryside which, not too long ago, may have been dotted by the occasional centuries-old farmstead and manor homes in need of some repair. While the typical rural farmstead remains the soul of Latvia, you can now find many new and unique hidden gems!
To name just one; think winery located on the 57th north parallel. Latvia’s regained independence in 1991 has ‘popped’ open the imagination of many an entrepreneur and there is no shortage of a lucky find.
The sheer volume of wild nature makes Latvia one of the greenest countries in the world. You will see how stately forests, pine-tree lined roads that hypnotise, broad mires, meadows, groves and gardens form the unique mosaic of the Latvian landscape.
It is in early Summer when berries have come into season and songbirds dance in the branches that the countryside teems with lush greenery, cute critters and endless wildflowers. It is here where many traditions run deep and daily rhythms are shaped less by outside influence.
This is Latvia’s Countryside.
